Sumner H. Peck

Local resident Sumner H. Peck, 94, died Sept. 11, 2012 at his home in Auburn.
Mr.
Peck was born July 1, 1918, in Lewiston, Maine, to Sumner and Annie Peck. After
graduating from Bowdoin College, he served in the 348th Engineer
Combat Battalion of the United States Army, landing on the beaches at Normandy
on D-Day and serving in the European campaign until the end of World War II.
Among other decorations and citations, Mr. Peck was awarded the Croix de Guerre
with Palm for his service. After the war, Mr. Peck returned to Lewiston-Auburn,
where he lived with his wife, Evelyn Smith, had two children, and worked for the
B. Peck Real Estate Company, which was associated with what was then one of
northern New England's largest retailers, Peck's Department Store. Mr. Peck was
active in the Kiwanis Club, and served for many years as treasurer of the
United Baptist Church in Lewiston. Following a long illness, his wife passed
away in 1977. Several years later, Mr. Peck married Shirley Bouchles, and they
lived happily in Auburn until her death in 1986.
Mr.
Peck is survived by two sons, William and David, and by his grandson, Gregory.
