Biography:
Ernest L. Steward, 89, of Manchester, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 20, at home after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Skowhegan on May 26, 1925, the son of William and Elsie (Littlefield) Steward. He attended schools in Skowhegan. During World War II he served in the Navy on the USS Strive. On Dec. 21, 1946, he married Kathleen C. Gove. His work career was spent at Hudson Pulp & Paper and Statler Tissue. After retirement, he worked at Damon's and Whipper's Car Wash. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the camp at Moosehead Lake, watching Westerns and working in his workshop and outside his home.
He will always be remembered for his wonderful smile, kind disposition and the love he shared with his family and friends.
Ernest is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen; daughters Jeannie Johnson and husband Frank, of Augusta, Linda Bechard and John Collins, of Readfield, and Margaret Steward and Kellie Fox, of Portland; and sons Bill Steward and wife Sue, of Manchester, Jim Steward, of Sidney, and Keith Steward, of Manchester. He is survived by 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Percy Steward, of Canaan, and Philip Steward, of Skowhegan. He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Steward; sisters Mildred Leo, Dorothy LeClair, Shirley Sawyer and Jesse Wing; and a son-in-law, Ronnie Bechard.
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Lee, Diane and Jackie at the oncology unit at VA Maine Healthcare System-Togus and to all of the loving caregivers from MaineGeneral Homecare & Hospice.
At Ernest's request, there will be no service. The family will host a celebration of his life at a later date.
