January 21, 2020 | CJ Spawn - StFrancis, Minnesota -- USA

I met Derek in Basic Training, while we were being yelled at. Although we were incredibly stressed, he introduced himself mid formation and we became good friends throughout our duration of boot camp. Although we lost communication with each other, he was a good friend and I am saddened to find this. I wish the best for all of his family and want you all to know be was a very kind and well liked person when I knew him.

I don't even know what to say except that I am more than honored and lucky to have know him.I met him this past summer and we became instant friends. This was easily the best summer of my life so far. Derek made me laugh and smile, even without trying. His sense of humor was infectious and goofy- I loved it. I was truly heartbroken when I found out about his passing. I pray for his family. I hope that they are well, I wish nothing but the best. I am sorry for their loss.
Derek, I miss you- RIP.

December 10, 2013 | Rachael Hmelo - Colorado Springs, CO -- United States

I wanted to express that my thoughts and prayers are with you. I was stationed with Derek in Korea from 2005-2006 and often worked alongside him as our two crews were quite close. I remember that he had a great sense of humor, and spirited opinions. Every interaction with Derek gave me the strong sense that those surface jokes guarded a great heart and a brilliant mind, and that the latter two made up the grand majority of his person.

I would not be who I am today without the hard work and heartfelt conversations our teams shared. Derek made an impact. He will be remembered, and carried with us forever as he is in some small but precious way an irrevocable part of who we are.

Rest peacefully.

We do not know Derek personally, although we feel like we do. We know Jeannie, she often spoke of Derek, she bragged about him as he was growing up, when he finishes high school, and when he went into the military. She never let anything go unnoticed; she is a very proud grandmother. When Jean spoke of Derek you could feel the love and admiration she had for him. Our hearts go out to Jeannie and her family during this time of sadness.

I have known Derek for a long time. We went to junior high, and high school together. I remember him as a smiling, happy individual. I will never forget what his friendship meant to me.

Thank you,

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. I was stationed with Derek in 2005 - 2006 at Camp Humphreys South Korea.
