Biography:

Joseph William Babcock, Jr., 78, of Pittston, ME passed away suddenly on May 5th, 2010 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta after brief illness.

Joseph was born in Seekonk, MA., July 1st, 1932, the son of Evangeline Eva Babcock (St. Andre) and Joseph William Babcock, Sr., both of Warren,R.I. and late of Pittston, ME.

Joseph graduated from Cony· High School in 1946 at the age of 14 and began Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in September, 1946 at the age of 15. He graduated with a degree in Engineering and served the Army Branch of the military (1953-55) as a Specialist Tech II in unoccupied Germany during the Korean War. He began work at Bates Mfg. as a 1st Cardroom supervisor/foreman on the 3rd shift and worked his way up to the Time Study Engineer in the General Offices for all Bates Mfg. Divisions in Lewiston in 1955. Joseph then worked throughout the mills and event­ually became Assistant Plant Manager under Clem Dostie in the Bates Mfg. Plant, Augusta Division in the late 60's and 70’s.

A dedicated husband and father, he enjoyed spending time at his camp on Lake Moxie up in the West Forks, Maine. He always enjoyed bird and deer hunting, and all types of fishing. He spent endless hours working on his gardens, wherever he was living at the time, and always enjoyed working up his wood to keep his woodstove going most of the time. A very active man, he also enjoyed golfing throughout most of his life.

Joseph was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Gilbert Thomas Babcock on April 19 of last year.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Pittston; his brother, Robert W. Babcock, Jr. and his wife, Cecile, of Chelsea; one son, David Alan Babcock of Arizona; two daughters, Debbie Marston and her husband Kendall of Hartford, ME. and Pamela Jo Stoddard and her husband Jeffrey, of Augusta; one granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Stoddard of Augusta; one stepson, Frank Andrew Folsom and his wife, Margorie Lynn of Chelsea; two stepgrandsons, Blake Andrew and Brandon Chase of Chelsea;. nieces and nephews Diane Babcock, Robert Babcock, Jr., Dwight Babcock, Donna Babcock and Roger Babcock and wife Wendy, one great-niece Wendy Babcock and one great­nephew, Garrett Babcock.
