Gwendolyn Dutton

Date of Death: August 13, 2018

Date of Birth: July 22, 1920

Biography:

BATH - Gwendolyn Dutton, much loved by her family and friends, passed away at 12:55 P.M. on Monday, August 13, 2018, at the age of 98. She was born in Bath, Maine, on July 22, 1920, to Ralph and Mabel (Curran) Lewis. Her father Ralph was a "paperhanger" by trade; her mother Mabel was a stay-at-home mom.

They had three children, Stanley, Louella, and Gwendolyn, and the family lived in the South End of Bath for several years.
In 1928, when Gwen was eight years old, tragedy struck the family when her beloved mother died of pneumonia. She describes this event as life-changing, as she watched her mother taken away in an ambulance from across the street, never to see her again.

A few years later Ralph married Dorothy Pereau, bringing her daughter Mary into the family, and in 1934 their daughter Beverly was born. They had a happy family, and Gwen greatly loved her brother and sisters, and kept in contact with all of them throughout her life.

Gwen grew up in Bath, Maine and graduated from Morse High School in 1938. She attended the Church of the Nazarene in Bath and it was there that she met Eugene Dutton. They were married in September of 1939 and had four children, all of whom survive her: Patricia Reed, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Richard Dutton, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Lynda Olson (and spouse Bud Heuer), Bath, ME; and Terry Dutton (and spouse Amy), Lisbon Falls, ME. Gwen had 4 children, 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren. Her husband Gene died in 2005.

Gwen learned to play the piano "by ear" when she was very young; she later learned to read music. She played for the Nazarene Church in Bath for many years, and for the Bath Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. And she played on occasion at several other Nazarene churches in the area. She had a special talent of making it easy for singers to sing to her accompaniment, and was much in demand for her playing, but always in the church. It was at the Bath Church of the Nazarene that Gwen met the Lord Jesus Christ, and gave her heart to him. And for the rest of her life she served the Lord.

She was a good seamstress and made many of the clothes for the family over the years. She was an avid reader, and always had a book from the Bath Library. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, putting together puzzles, making jam, and canning vegetables. She enjoyed lobstering and fishing at the cottage built by her husband on Little Yarmouth Island in Harpswell, Maine.

Gwen lived at "The Moorings" in Bath for several years and made some good friends there. She served on the activity committee and participated in many of their special events. Due to a series of falls, she spent her last year and a half at Winship Green Nursing Home in Bath, where she received good care, good food, and kindness from the many staff members. The family also thanks the Hospice staff for assisting her in her last hours.

Gwen has requested that there be no public service. She prefers that people remember her as she was before.
