Biography:

Rebecca "Betty" (MacKenzie) Holmes, 76, of Hallowell, ME, died peacefully June 28, 2011, at MGMC Thayer Campus, in Waterville, surrounded by her family.

Betty was born in Kingman, ME, on August 21, 1934, the 6th child of Robert Hamilton MacKenzie and Daisy May (Anderson) MacKenzie.

Betty attended Kingman and Hallowell schools and graduated from Hallowell High School in 1952 as Valedictorian of her class. She worked for Depositors Trust (now Key Bank) for several years after graduating from high school and retired from the State of Maine, Bureau of Motor Vehicles as Supervisor of Court Records after more than 20 years of service.

Betty was active in the Jaycees in her younger years. She enjoyed dancing, camping, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Holmes was predeceased by her mother and father, brothers Robert,Herman, Ray and Percy, sister Tressie, and husbands Freeland Proctor and Harold Holmes.

Betty leaves behind daughter Janice Pilling LaChance and husband Joe of Pittston; sons Jeffrey Pilling and partner Wendy of Pittston and James Pilling of North Whitefield. She is also survived by grandchildren Graham Weston of Owls Head, Janene LaChance of Augusta, Kristina LaChance of West Gardiner, Nicole Michaud and husband Nate of West Gardiner, Stacey

Sutter and husband Tim of West Gardiner, Jeffrey Pilling and wife Diane of West Gardiner, and Katie Pilling Hutchings of Whitefield. She also leaves a brother Arnold of Farmingdale, 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside committal services will be held on July 9th at 11am at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Auburn with the Rev. Peter Inchcombe officiating. A gathering will follow at the LaChance home on Route 194, in Pittston.
