John J. King Jr.

Date of Death: January 14, 2020

Date of Birth: November 14, 1924

Biography:

King, John J. Age 95, of Hingham and Harwich Port, and recently of Brunswick, ME, passed peacefully on January 14, 2020. He was the beloved husband for sixty years of the late Nancy King, father of John (Marcia) of Brunswick, ME and Harwich Port, Pamela Johnson of Harwich Port and Wilmington, VT, and “Gramp” for Joshua (Abby) King, Heather (Benjamin) Sullivan, Abigail (Eben) Mathews, and Jessica (Gordon) McLaughlin, and his seven great-grandsons, Graham and Reid, Nolan, Wylie and Everett, and Ivan and Howard. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Patricia Hines and Barbara Hennessey and his son-in-law, Neil Johnson. Mr. King was raised in West Roxbury and attended Roxbury Latin School. He served in the United States Army in World War II, and was a proud graduate of Harvard University. He had a long career in the transportation industry as an executive and manager for Jenkins Transportation Co. and Shaughnessy & Ahearn Trucking and Rigging. After his first retirement, he worked for 10 years in quality assurance for Hub Pen, finally stopping work at age 89. He was a proud and loyal worker, civic and club volunteer who “never missed a day,” ensuring that others were safe and successful. He found his greatest joys in family boating, skiing and holiday activities at Stone Horse Yacht Club on Cape Cod and mountains throughout New England. He was an enthusiastic and patient golfer, tennis player and ice hockey player. He is remembered by his children and grandchildren for all the love and pride he and Nancy shared in everyone’s successes and celebrations. He shared his calm, his quiet smile and his quick wink with all, no matter how boisterous was the action around him. A private family interment will take place in Harwich in the summer and the family plans to host a celebration of Gramp’s life gathering for all friends on Cape Cod. Memorial donations in John’s memory may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, 383 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074 or www.alz.org, or to a charity of your choice that John would appreciate. His family is immensely grateful for the extraordinary care and support given to John by all the caregivers and staff of Avita of Brunswick.
