Obituary of Alfred C. Koehler, Jr.

Alfred Curtis Koehler, Jr., 90, of Ocean Park, ME, formerly of Seymour, CT, passed away at Seaside Rehab and Health Care Center in Portland, ME on Nov. 21, 2011 after a long illness. He was born on July 26, 1921 in Seymour and had been a resident of Ocean Park since his retirement in 1978. He served with the U.S. Third Army in the European Theater of Operations in World War II, and was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and held as a German prisoner of war until his liberation on Easter Sunday in 1945. He was an honor speaker at the 1939 Seymour High School graduation, and was a 1943 graduate of Syracuse University. Alfred was also president and co-owner with his brother, Robert, of the Seymour Brass Turning Co. in Seymour until his retirement. He had been an active member of Rotary International for many years and served on numerous municipal committees and boards in Seymour until his retirement when he became an avid golfer. He was happiest when he was at his home in Ocean Park and was a long time member of the Ocean Park Association. Additionally, he had been a member of the United Methodist Church in Seymour and became a parishioner of the First Parish Congregational Church in Saco when he moved to Maine. He thoroughly enjoyed being with his family including his three grandchildren and his numerous nieces and nephews who affectionately referred to him for over 40 years as “Uncle Al the kiddies’ pal.”

Alfred was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Kathleen Davis Koehler, his parents, Alfred C. Koehler, Sr. and Agnes Creelman Koehler and two sisters, Ruth M. Koehler and Rhoda K. Walker. He is survived by his children, A. Curtis Koehler, III, of Ocean Park, ME, Dr. Richard D. Koehler and his wife, the former Lynne M. Budris, of Southbury, CT, and Beth Ann Koehler and her partner Sapphire Stretton of Portland, ME; three grandchildren, Erin K. Koehler, of Southbury, CT, Courtney J. Koehler, of Terryville, CT, and Dr. Kelly-Lynne E. Koehler-Hamilton, Captain USAF, of Albuquerque, N.M; one great-grandson, Joshua T. Koehler, of Southbury, CT; and one brother, Robert T. Koehler, of Palm Coast, FL.

There will be no calling hours but a memorial service is scheduled for December 10, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the First Parish Congregational Church in Saco. ME. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ocean Park Association Property Committee, PO Box 7518 14 Temple Ave., Ocean Park, ME 04063-7518.
