Raymond H. Libby

Date of Death: June 13, 2011

Date of Birth: June 20, 1938

Biography:

AUBURN-Raymond H. Libby, 72, a lifelong resident of Leeds, died Monday, June 13, 2011 at the Androscoggin Hospice House. He was born on June 20, 1938, the youngest child of Herbert A. and Sarah Jane “Sadie” Nichols Libby. He was educated in Leeds and Turner and graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1957.

Mr. Libby owned and operated R.H. Libby Trucking, and his blue Ford trucks were a familiar sight in the Leeds area. For many years he was hired by Blue Rock Industries to haul gravel into the crusher plant and to work on hot-top crews. He worked for the Town of Leeds sanding winter roads, and for over twenty years he held the contract to sand and plow the roads in Wales and Sabattus. His trucks delivered fertilizer to farms throughout Maine. He was responsible for digging many cellar holes and septic systems and was known to dig a grave for man or beast. He enjoyed hauling stock cars to the races at Oxford Plains Speedway.

In his retirement, Mr. Libby could often be seen riding the roads or at the end of the Libby Rd., sitting in his red Ford Ranger, keeping watch over the neighborhood.

He was a long time member of the Leeds Volunteer Fire Department and was Fire Chief from 1978 to 1979.

Raymond  was predeceased by his parents and by his siblings, Ida Frost, LeRoy, and baby Phillip, who died in infancy. He is survived by cousins.

Family and friends are invited to a graveside service on Thursday, June 16th, at 3:45 PM at Union Cemetery, Bernie Hartford Road, Leeds. In lieu of flowers donations are preferred to the Leeds Volunteer Fire Dept, c/o of Leeds Municipal Office, Community Drive, Leeds, ME 04263 or the charity of your choice.
