Robert W MacKinnon

Date of Death: August 13, 2019

Date of Birth: March 23, 1934

Biography:

West Bath-Robert (Bob) MacKinnon of West Bath, Maine died on August 13, 2019.  He was born on March 23, 1934, in Boston to Mary and Malcolm MacKinnon.  He passed away at home in his favorite spot overlooking the New Meadows River surrounded by his wife Darlene and his four daughters: Lorna MacKinnon (Joe) of Dresden, Jean Dittrich (Craig) of West Bath/Casco, and Patty MacKinnon (Glenn) and Nan MacKinnon (Abi) of Brunswick. He is previously deceased by his young daughter Susan, his sweet sister Chrissie, and the mother of his five daughters, Janet. He leaves behind his sisters Jean Lockhart and Marylyn Tomajan of West Bath, seven grandchildren: Christine, Shawn, Robert, Jake, Katie, Marina, and Jada along with nine great-grandchildren, nieces Sharon Lockhart, Laurie Dyment, and Pamela Pettis, and nephew Kurt Pettis. He also leaves an extended family of in-laws, and lifetime friends Billy Condon, Paul Berry, Glenn Beaver, and Susan Padden.

Bob was a self-made man having had several successful businesses in the automotive services in Millis, Massachusetts. He was a fine craftsman and an expert sailor. After summering in Maine for decades, he retired to West Bath in the early 80’s and met and married his First Mate, Darlene. At that time he started his second career building aluminum gangways along the coast of Maine. He fulfilled his lifetime goal of building his own lobster cruising yacht, the Northern Pride. As an avid sailor, he and his wife traveled extensively along the entire East Coast, the Caribbean, and the Bay of Fundy. He was a man of few words but would talk at length about anything nautical and always had a black lab companion by his side. Rest your oars, Captain.

On Friday, August 16th at 1:00 pm a memorial service will be held for Robert MacKinnon at the Durham Friends Meeting House, 532 Quaker Meeting House Road, Durham, Maine. In lieu of flowers, feel free to donate to the Special Olympics.
