Biography:

Elinor Multer—Harpswell—Elinor Multer, 90, of Harpswell passed away on November 13, 2017. She was born in Manhattan, New York on August 23,1927, a daughter of William and Dorothy Bacharach Schatzkin. Elinor attended Camp Fernwood in Maine as a young girl. She studied premed at Cornell University where she met her husband Robert Multer whom she married. During this time the family frequently vacationed in Maine and it was always a dream to relocate there one day. Elinor was a passionate writer and worked as a reporter for the Asbury Park Press and the Red Bank Register in New Jersey. She also wrote a weekly column on education. Later she worked for Brookdale Community College in New Jersey where she was in charge of public relations. Elinor also worked in the construction business for a brief period of time which included the design and completion of their family home in Maine. Elinor found joy in public service and was appointed to a term on the State Board of Education by then Governor Angus King. She next was elected and served as select woman in Harpswell for two terms until she retired at age 89 this past April. Elinor was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Harvey. Survivors include her children: Kent, Gary, Harvey and Linda and two grandsons, Jayson and Christine. A celebration of Elinor's life will be held on Wednesday, November 29 from 6-8 p.m. at the Library Hall, 2167 Harpswell Island Road, Bailey Island. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elinor's memory may be made to the Harpswell School Department, S.A.D. 75, 50 Republic Avenue, Topsham, ME 04086 or to a school district of one's choice.
