Charles Melvin Oikle

Date of Death: July 5, 2011

Date of Birth: December 14, 1915

Biography:

Charles Melvin Oikle, 95, died July 5, 2011 at Hill House Assisted Living Facility, Bath, Maine after a brief illness.

Charlie was born December 14, 1915 in Tremont, Kings County, Nova Scotia, the son of Charles Freeman Oikle and Minnie MacGinnis Oikle.  Until age 12, Charlie, his brother Wilfred and his sisters Marjorie and Dorothy lived with their parents in Nova Scotia until the family came to the United States, settling in the Worcester, Massachusetts area.  His parents, brothers and sisters predeceased him.  Charlie lived in the Worcester/Northborough Mass area until moving to Maine in 2008.  He proudly became a United States citizen in 1947, but always maintained a special fondness for Nova Scotia.

From 1942 to 1964 he was married to Marion E. Patterson and they had two sons.

He was a machinist by trade and was employed by the Leon J. Barrett Co. in Millbury, Mass from World War II until retirement.  His second job, but his first love, was repairing automobiles, and whenever at home he could be found crawling in, under and around cars.  One of his happiest memories came at the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, Mass., when as the owner of a brand new Ford sedan, he actually met and shook hands with the innkeeper who was Henry Ford.

Mel, as Charlie was also known, was married for 37 years to Beatryce Reynolds Vaughan Oikle.  Until her death in 2002, Mel and Bea were rarely found at home.  They spent their retirement years on the road touring the United States and Canada by car.

Mel is survived by a son from his first marriage, James Oikle and his wife Susan of Brunswick, Maine and two grandsons, Michael and Joshua; also a son by marriage, Donald Vaughan and his wife Nancy of Southbridge, Mass, and two granddaughters, Cassie and Lindsay; also a daughter by marriage Patricia Casey and her husband Tom of Worcester, Mass and grandchildren Tom, Carolyn, and Susan; also a daughter by marriage, Pamela Vaughan of Worcester.  A son, Charles Gordon Oikle, died in 1944 at the age of 8 weeks.  Extended family includes nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States and in Nova Scotia.

At Mel’s request there will be no services and he will be buried next to his beloved wife, Bea, in Nova Scotia.
