Biography:

PARIS — Pauline Mae Phelps, 83, of Greene, died Saturday, Dec. 23, at Market Square Health Care Center in Paris.

She was born May 22, 1934, in Auburn to Leroy Daniel Phelps Sr. and Beatrice Saunders Phelps.

She attended elementary schools in Mexico, Paris, Portland, South Portland and Oxford, Webster Junior High School in Auburn and graduated from Oxford High School in the Class of 1951.

She graduated from the New England School of Theology in Brookline in 1956 and received a master's degree in education from Boston Teachers College. She taught at a private school in Brookline, Mass., Boston public schools, and St. James Educational Center. She was a teacher/administrator at Oxford Christian Academy in Oxford and a teacher at Guy E. Rowe Elementary School in Norway.

Pauline also raised nieces Paula J. Woodbury and Tina Williams, and nephew Daniel P. Phelps.

She was known to some family members, including Jason Williams, Christopher DeMass, Joshua DeMass, Shane Williams and Brandon Woodbury, as "Gram." To others she was known as "Aunt Pauline."

She was a member of Oxford Advent Christian Church, Somerville Advent Christian Church in Somerville, Mass., and St. James Episcopal Church in Roxbury, Mass.

She was a Bible teacher at Harbinger Bible Conference in Dalton, New Hampshire, for 16 years, and at Oxford Advent Christian Church and at private homes.

Pauline spent summers at her cottage on Allen Pond in Greene and winters in Oxford.

Survivors include a sister, Ruby Foster, and her husband, Donald, of Norway; nephew Daniel P. Phelps of Auburn, niece Paula J. Woodbury and her husband, Ralph, of Liberty; many other nieces, nephews and cousins; and a close friend, Hazel Clifford, of Oxford.

She was predeceased by her parents; a niece, Tina Williams; a brother, Leroy D. Phelps Jr.; four half sisters, Dorothy Pond, Geraldine Cowles, Audrey Ellsworth and Marion Minor; and a half brother, Kenneth Swan.

PHELPS — Pauline M., 83, died Saturday, Dec. 23, at Market Square Health Care Center. A service celebrating her life will be held at the Oxford Advent Christian Church, 1130 Main St., Oxford, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30. There are no visiting hours. A commital service will be held at the Phelps family lot in Demerritt Cemetery, Route 108, Peru, in the spring.
