Date of Death: November 27, 2018

Date of Birth: July 9, 1927

Biography:

BRUNSWICK - Marjorie Gott Reed, age 91, died on November 27, 2018, in Brunswick, Maine. She was born Marjorie Lois Gott, the daughter of Chester M. Gott and Helen Scheib Gott on July 9, 1927, in Arlington, Massachusetts. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1945. After High School, she attended Bryant and Stratton Business School in Boston and learned accounting skills that she used in professional and volunteer capacities throughout her life.

Marjorie met Clayton F. Reed when visiting family on Mount Desert Island. They married in 1948 and were married for almost 68 years. Marjorie supported Clayton in resuming his theological studies in 1956. They served six parishes in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York before retiring in 1986. Clayton and Marjorie retired to Clayton's family home in Bass Harbor, Maine. Marjorie continued to support Clayton's part-time work as an interim minister for churches in Bangor, Newport and Machias. Marjorie was always active in church life from singing in the choir, to picking 40 quarts of strawberries for a Strawberry Festival Fund Raiser, working on church suppers, helping with vacation Bible School, and many mission projects. In retirement she graduated with certification in Small Church Leadership from Bangor Theological Seminary, an academic accomplishment that she was very proud of. Marjorie was a long time member of the Somesville Union Meeting House where she enjoyed encouraging others with their faith journeys. She thoroughly enjoyed her experience volunteering in the building of a Habitat for Humanity Home on Mount Desert Island.

Marjorie was a very creative person who stayed active even when health issues would have kept others on the sidelines. She had many interests including refinishing furniture, gardening, canning and freezing, sewing her daughter's formal dresses, decorating wedding cakes, baking cookies, braiding rugs, and home remodeling. She enjoyed the challenge of learning new skills.

Five years ago, Marjorie moved to the Bath/Brunswick area to be closer to family. She always enjoyed making new friends. Her smile warmed many hearts.

Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Claudia and her husband, Reid Hatch, of Woolwich, Maine; daughter, Andrea, and her husband, Edward Freeman, of Brighton, Massachusetts: granddaughter, Wendy Harvey, and her wife, Peg Gagnon, of Westbrook, Maine; grandson, Marc Harvey, and wife, Betsy Roter, of Bradford, Massachusetts; grandson, Joshua Freeman, and wife, Diana Freeman, of Malden, Massachusetts; and great grandsons, Lucas Harvey and Asa Harvey of Bradford, Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her sister, Katherine L. Gott, and her husband, Rev. Clayton F. Reed.

A Celebration of Marjorie's Life will be held at the Somesville Union Meeting House in Somesville, Maine, on January 5, 2019, at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Victor Stanley officiating. All who attend are invited to a reception at the Somesville Union Meeting House Parish Hall. A Committal Service will be held in the spring at Hill Rest Cemetery in West Tremont, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Somesville Union Meeting House, UCC, P.O. Box 96, Mount Desert, ME 04660, or to Hancock County Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 343, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
